It depends upon the map symbol.  In order, from smallest to largest: +, *, ☼, and #.  I think.
I'm pretty sure ☼ is the biggest

Yeah, it's + * # ☼ , and it's not actually a size of the town but a number of citizens, however they are tied.

I don't know what's the factor, sometimes they build a lot of 1-room houses and sometimes they build multi-store multi-room dorms. Probably it has something to do with the number of families and guards.

Here's a stupid question, can you sell corpses of animals you've killed in the wild, and if so, how?

I'm pretty sure corpses have a value of zero. But I could be wrong. I usually only carry around corpses to throw at children.

I have a cougar corpse that is worth 300, and the merchant just keeps telling me that his items are _fine_ items, and that I should offer him more. (Playing the 2D version)

I dunno about the 2D version, but I just tested it in 40d and yes you can sell them. Are you trying to trade for items? Maybe you should try trading for currency instead.

He just says that he wants to trade but I need to select items first. :(

If trading is anything like 40d just hit A once you've selected the corpse. When you try to trade he'll make a much more reasonable counteroffer. But I've never played the 2D version, so it could be different.

I tried but he just continues to say the same thing. I guess you can't sell corpses in the 2D version.. :(

I've not been able to sell them as of yet, but my dead ground hog corpse is my most effective throwing weapon so far.

I threw that thing through a giant's lung!

His lung!

Course, it still managed to rip one of my slave children in half... that was kind of tragic.

To the dorf pulling the lever, the lever is just a lever. The magma pouring out of the mountainside is just a coincidence. To the dorf designing a pump stack from the magma sea, it is just that: a pump stack. No specific reason for it. It will never do anything.
for reasons best knows to themselves, the elves decided to explode

In older versions you could sell 9000+ bits of Red Sand from outside of the guy's shop and have enough to buy whatever you wanted.

Corpses, dirt, ect, are worthless in current mode. Even when hunting/advent resource/ ect comes into place you are probably not going to get much for that dead elk anyways, considering the mats and the way DF manages values and economics in the game
