A Question On Traps
« on: October 23, 2009, 01:02:32 am »

Okay, very simple, I got a long wide hallway that leads up into my fortress. I plan on putting a row of floodgates near the exit of the hallway, entrance to my fortress (underground). My idea was that when the invader enters the long hall, they will step onto the plate, triggering the river above to come rushing down upon them and sweep them away from the hallway. My question is: if i have multiple pressure plates hooked up to one set of floodgates, if multiple invaders touch multiple plates, will it start then stop, then start when each one runs over another plate?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Yes, but the delays for both floodgates and pressure plates (switching off for the latter) are pretty long.  The shortest amount of time the floodgates will stay open is around 300 steps: 100 to open the gates, 100 to trigger a deactivation, and 100 to close the gates.  Though, with pressure plate inaccuracies, it's very possible for the gates to get stuck either open or closed.

There's a design on the wiki for a permanent pressure plate, so that one step on any plate will keep those gates open until you reset the system manually.

Also, using water to push is iffy.  For best results, make sure it never gets above 6/7 level, or it will stop pushing altogether, if it does at all.

1) Use a raised bridge, not floodgates.  Not only does it require less mechanism/hookup, but floodgates will fail to close if there is any item on them, including socks or (more pertinently) invaders.

2) Except for gear assemblies, pressure plates do not toggle, they send "on" or "off".  So you don't need to worry about multiple invaders too much.

However, 100 ticks after they step off of the plate, it'll send the off signal.  There are designs that circumvent this, but they get more complicated -- in general, it requires the pressure plate manipulate some other closed system so that once triggered, the state of the initial pressure plates don't matter anymore.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.
