Well, turns out I somehow have a Splinter Cell Game, and I can't figure out how to use a gift box in Merry Gear Solid.

Splinter Cell Stealth is sneaking around in dark corners, moving across rafters and dropping down at the exact right moment to crack a neck.

Metal Gear Solid stealth is either stay in a shadow/ditch/behind a wall somewhere until the blind AI walks past you and you knife him in the back/sleeping bullet him in the head or just run in guns blazing 'till there is nobody left to notice you sneaking around.

It would be Hitman Stealth. With the difference that while you are not dressed up, they try to kill you. I was killed once because, while dressed up as a German soldier, I still had an American SMG across my back... Hint: mind the details. A cook carrying a rifle doesn't work, either.

I can't believe noone's mentioned the Commandos games yet. They're all about stealth and subterfuge. I think you can get the whole series on steam for a handful of change.

Batman: Arkham Asylum has a stealth element, although it has a kind of minigame feel to it. Whenever you see a gargoyle up on a wall you're supposed to swoop around and take out armed goons without being seen while they get more and more panicked. There's several challenge maps for this as well.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I am going to get one game in the hitman series but don't know which would be the best one to get. Any suggestions?

Well, I'd rate them, from worst to best:  Hitman 1 (Codename 47), Hitman 3 (Contracts), Hitman 2 (Silent Assassin), Hitman 4 (Blood Money).

Hitman 1 was kind of annoying in the sense that the optimal/stealthy solution was pretty hard, linear and unintuitive to pull off. Hitman 2 gave a considerable bit more of freedom, but removed the financial aspect from the first game. Hitman 3 went more storyline/atmosphere/grimdark oriented and rehashed a bunch of missions from Hitman 1. Hitman 4 feels like a sum of various parts from the previous games. It's got buying weapons/upgrades, it's got multiple ways of accomplishing missions (with the "accident" solution being pretty intuitive) and while not as dark as Contracts, the levels are often pretty atmospheric.

The only thing I'd fault Blood Money with is disjoint storytelling. It feels like there's none in the actual missions and most notable things happen during briefings, cutscenes and newspaper headlines outside of the missions.

I believe you can only get Commandos 2 and 3 on Steam. GoG has all three on the cheap.

The first two are the best, while the third I have heard a lot of negative things about and haven't bothered with it yet.

Just don't go into it expecting it to be rich in historical accuracy or anything. WWII buffs better brace themselves.

Hitman Contracts was pretty interesting for what it was worth. I love pulling off the "accident" kills. Like in one of the levels, one target can be executed in his sauna.

But my all time favorite level in that game has to be the one that you raid the mansion. For one, if you get caught, it's just fun to get through it alive, blasting just about anyone that gets in your way; but the ultimate challenge (as per genre) is stealth via disguises and hiding.

I think I only beat the level as it was supposed to be beat once. And I got really lucky when I pulled it off. I think I got my very first silent assassin in that level. Normal difficulty, of course.

I really thought blood money was okay, altough I never completed a single level in 100% stealth (ie, dont even slip out of your suit) mode, which I did with contracts. Contracts was awesome that way. First finish it any way you can, then try it again without ever disguising yourself. Is hard, rewarding work.

About MGS: Altough I'm really a fan of the series, who owns the first game on the original cartridge, I'm more than dissapointed by the friggin manga-turn the series took. I wanna snap some necks, not watch videos about relationships. What is this? A friggin chick flick? Seriously. If I wanna chick flick, I get one. You dont write chocolate on a package and put shit in it.

Splinter Cell: Shadow mechanics might appear stupid, even to two-digit-IQ folks, but for some reason, the games can be very enjoyable. The guard dialogues, whether among the guards themselves or with sam fisher, can be hilarious. Co-op Mode in Chaos Theory is pretty darn good, too. MGS should have gone were Splinter Cell went. In a dark and manly corner, hiding and preying.
Whatever you do, AVOID double agent on the wii. It's alright, but they make you pay full price for half the content, and sometimes that leaves you with VERY weird mission logic.

I think "Prisoner of War" hasnt been mentioned yet, and I really enjoyed that one, too, at least on the first playthrough. Actually I thought this was one of the best stealth games I ever played. I just wished it was longer. Dunno whether or not there have been any (worthwile) sequels.

Although you're entitled to your own opinion, which I wouldn't dare to negate, i'm going to have to respectfully disagree. The MGS series written by Hideo Kojima, starting with the original on the Playstation was by far, the most immersive, tear jerking story of absolute brilliance i've ever had the pleasure of being totally addicted to. For this reason, I regard Kojima as a genius. Snapping necks and killing dudes is fair and fine, but i've done that a million times over in video games, none of them are really ever memorable experiences. Following Snake and the gang through their painful endeavours to triumph over the million or so bad guys they encounter has been a journey that I will not forget any time soon.

MGS on the playstation was awesome. But I think I'd need some sockpuppets so I can tell a therapist where MGS2 touched me before I can move on.

edit:
stories are fine. MGS1 had the feeling of an old batman episode with adam west, only with style. The villains were awesomely cheesy! I so loved it!

But going into chickflick mode while in intrusion mode - wtf. there was more than one dialogue in MGS2 where the only plausible answer by snake would have been "SERIOUSLY, SHUT UP, I'm tryin to NOT GET KILLED HERE!"

And rayden - well- lets just not talk about rayden.

It's as if Hideo suddenly developed the ability to menstruate.

Any free ones that are especially good? Already played trilby, though it's lost in the pile of old windows installation files, and just enjoyed merry gear...
