I have a huge waterfall seeded from another thread. I'm trying to divert it across a canyon, and it's sorta working. However, since it's too wet The dwarves won't build a floor underneath it. I have all but 2 squares of waterfall blocked off but the remaining empty squares still have 2/7 water in them. What ways could I temporarily stop the flow of water to work there? I would say ice, but its warm in my embark zone. Please help!

Depending on the width of the river, you could build a bunch of screw pumps to pump the river back onto itself, then build the dam a ways downstream.

It's practically a creek, only about 6 wide.  I'll give it a shot.
Anyone have any other possible ideas, since I am rubbish at machinery and I don't have much dwarfpower?

Build a temporary diversion. On the level below the river, dig a tunnel the full width of the river, then dig to where you want the water to come out. Put a door or hatch somewhere in the middle. Construct floors overhanging the river over the tunnel, and collapse them, punching through the riverbed and into the diversion tunnel. When finished, pull the lever to shut the door.
