Dwarves won't carry barrels
« on: October 18, 2009, 09:56:46 pm »

Just started a new fortress and I'm having the oddest problem.

When I start a fortress I put my stockpiles outside until I can mine out rooms for them inside.  I had a furniture stockpile outside that had my anvil, and some empty alcohol barrels.  I moved the woodpile inside and set up a carpenter shop to start producing bins and barrels.  For convenience's sake, I usually set up my food stockpile to also accept barrels, and my finished goods pile to accept empty bins.  That way, once the piles are full of barrels/bins, I know to stop making them.  So once I had food and goods piles inside, I removed the outside stockpile.

At this point, my dwarves apparently forgot how to haul barrels.  My carpenters shop is overcluttered with empty barrels.  My still is full of emptied plant barrels, and my seeds and food piles are full of unbarreled items, with dozens of empty barrels sitting around.

For good measure, I set up a furniture pile both inside and outside, and it hasn't made a difference.

Any ideas what's going on?  I hope it's not just bugged, this is the last site in the world with magma, underground river and HFS.

Actually, it seems to be all furniture.  I just noticed my mason's shop is full of all of the thrones and tables I haven't placed in my new dining room yet, and I've got 2 idlers with furniture hauling just sitting there along with two empty furniture piles.

Not hauling furniture?  Check under (o)rders that "Dwarves Gather F(u)rniture" instead of them ignoring it.  You may have switched that accidentally.

This was it...How the heck did I do that?  I only use that menu to tell them to go get bones from outside and to stay inside during seiges.

A semi-related note.

I had a food stockpile that had everything. seeds, fish, meat, booze. Everything... but I wasn't content with this.

I moved everything to four stockpiles. One next to the farms for seeds. One next to the food processing sector for unprepared fish, corpses, untanned hides. One for milling products, alcohol, drinks, fat and miscellaneous.. and one for prepared meals, fish, meat and plants.

The old stockpile was removed but there stood 10 barrels that no one would touch. Why? I checked them and they were all fish barrels. The dwarves apparently mix unprepared with prepared fish if they have the stockpile that allows it, they do NOT re-arrange the contents of the barrels to fit the new stockpiles... so I gave in and let them store some unprepared fish with the prepared ones. What's the worst that could happen?

I think you can turn off mixxing contents in bins and barrels at the Orders menu.

But, the current bug of populatity happens to be... Do you have any inaccessible furniture stockpiles?

And the curiosity point...  Did they take the booze out of the barrel to store it?

I think I found the problem: No matter how large a number you set in a food stockpile's "max barrels" or a goods stockpile's "max bins", the dwarves will always use the lowest possible number for the amound of food and goods you have.
To store barrels and bins, you need a Furniture stockpile.

I'd suggest making a separate stockpile for unprepared fish (near the fishery) and one for prepared turtle only, that's the setup I use. A 20 tile Raw Fish stockpile and a Turtle pile of about the same size, set to "Take From" all other stockpiles that once held Turtle. IMO the secret to having dwarves sort mixed-content bins is lots of small specialized stockpiles taking from a huge massive one (or three).

Except you can't have more then one small stockpile take from the big one.

One of my biggest annoyances with this, likely related, is if you set one stockpile to take from another but don't allow it to use barrels/bins, dwarves will seemingly never take items out of the barrels/bins to move them to the new stockpile - once it's in a barrel or bin, it seems to stay there forever unless you take some extraordinary measures (I managed it once with a bin full of artifacts, but don't remember anymore how I did it).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Waaagh *facepalm*
I was wondering what kept breaking my "take from" orders ... oh well the old system (randomly re-assigning take orders) doesn't work too badly for me  ::)

once it's in a barrel or bin, it seems to stay there forever unless you take some extraordinary measures

The functions of bins seems to vary somewhat by precisely what's being stored... but I have definitely had things moved out of bins and barrels using the trick below.

Make a new stockpile that is as precise as possible - and forbid bins/barrels there. So: Artifact, rock, swords. As narrow as a possible.

Set the old stockpile to be much, much wider - and allow bins. In the case here, I'd make it "Artifact, any material, anything"

This only works for -some- things. And I don't expect it would work for prepared food (which works differently anyway).
