I vote archive, though having all the forts in a single region would be awesome, turns that last entire fortresses would be just too darn long. All succession games are cursed to have incredibly long turn spans anyway (well except SparkGear that is cursed with everything else.) Also having strict time limits would lower fortress quality. Plus people can use their favorite mods.

And if you decide to go the archive way, I can contribute with two fortresses I have been building especially for adventure mode. (though I need a few weeks to get some of the traps going on the other one and to finish a certain magma pump tower in the other)

It would be really cool if we could have all the forts in one world so an adventurer could gather all the artifacts from all the forts and end up with a million eagle-bone amulets and jade toy-forges.

That said, it would also be really impractical for reasons servu listed. If we did do it all in one world, it'd probably be done in time for the next release where everyone will promptly stop caring.

I'd say to go with a big archival thread.

I've been thinking of next release too... alright, archival thread it is.  Maybe we can revisit putting it all in one region later, after the next release.

I'll go create a separate thread for the archive.  Check the Adventure Mode Discussion thread in a little bit (since there's another game similar to this there, I'd prefer to keep it uniform)

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.
Do it.

I think we should stay away from modded games. Using edited dwarves is fine, but adding Orcs or new megabeasts will just cause everyone to have to go and download them or even download their entire dwarf fortress folder...
