Cause of death
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:58:29 am »

Well, I got inspired by my recently murdered war dog.
It would be useful to have a function that would describe a body's condition.
For instance:
"This is a Stray War Dog corpse.
It has multiple gashes (Indicating a sword).
It has crushed bones (A blunt weapon/fall from height)
It's body is covered in claw marks (Wild animal(s))
It's very, very cold (Not sure about this one, since a body gets colder over time anyway, but it could be used to describe death by freezing)
It's pierced with arrows/bolts/darts (Kind of obvious)
It has multiple piercing wounds (Spear etc.)"

So yeah, I'd like to see this implemented since it would be useful and cool.

PS. I did search for this, couldn't find a similar suggestion though.

Wouldn't the combat logs in the new version pretty much accomplish this?

If you want to cycle through thousands of messages ok.

Though what if that creature wasn't even on the visable map at the time?

It could be an interesting way to get the appropriate strength of unknown creatures.

I thought there was going to be a separate log for each critter (including the dead ones?) and maybe for each combat instance. If not, then I'm sure someone will figure out a way to do so.

Wounds get transferred to corpses in the next version:

01/06/2009: [...] I also did wounds from falling and the transfer of wound and appearance data to corpses and severed parts. The wound transfer should be key to sorting out issues like exactly where a hydra's heads are and whether or not the skulls have been removed and so on.

It's not clear whether you'll be able to view those wounds yet, though:

Will there be a way to actually view corpse wounds?  Will corpses be able to receive more wounds?

Hrm, I don't really know.  Maybe not, as item viewing has often gotten the short end of the stick, though the appearance paragraph generator could very well be applied direcly to the corpse items, and they have all the info, so maybe it will go in.  Right now, corpses don't receive additional abuse, but given that Armok 1 had that whole corpse processing thing well underway, there will eventually be lots of things in this direction.  Adventure mode could very well become creepy, and the adv skills arc is probably when we'll be going there.

Also, yeah, you can view announcements by creature:

Quote from: dev log
02/21/2009: The combat/hunting/sparring reports work. You can view adv mode style messages by creature and category (comb/hunt/spar) now and all of the announcements have associated dates. Those that have associated locations are zoomable from the announcement/report screens.

CSI: Boatmurdered

Anyway, I'm sure it's been suggested before. But yeah, I'd like to know how my dwarves are mysteriously dying (although it might remove some entertaining FUN).

What would be even better is if each wound carried information about who did it (which could be featured in an engraving)

For example:

This is the corpse of Urist MCChampion

There is an arrow wound in his right leg. The arrow was fired by the Elf Pointy McTwinkles.
There is a slash in his right side, resulting from a terrible blow from the sword of the Elf Twinkles McPointy.
HIs skull was crushed by the hammer of Urist McHammerer.
