« on: October 12, 2009, 07:37:36 pm »

See title
I want to basicly make a city like the one from the book"the city of ember"
basicly huge cavern with a city built in it
and all suplies needed for a hundred years isolated from the surface
only a tiny farm
100 dwarfs 200 years
safe from the flood the world with magma project
also an underground river to power the waterwheels
everything is stored in guge catacombes

According to the wiki, dwarves eat about once a season, and drink about four times.

So, 80k units of food, and 320k units of drink, with a bit extra for leeway.

You'll need to produce an extra 400 units of food per year, and 1600 of drink, so you don't start eating into your massive reserves...

It's hard to say how much barrels/storage space you'd need, because with a legendary brewer, you can fit many more than 5 units of drink in a barrel. (however many you can make out of a stack of plant.)

Meat fits 10 to a barrel, but prepared meals can sit on their own, in bigger stacks than 10. If you're making a mockup of a city from a book, you'd probably want barrels for 'realism' rather than amazing dwarven dirt floor storage though. :)

Edit: *am checking incessantly to make sure my simple multiplication isn't wrong, that would look stupid...*

No requesting elderly or young via modding.

You can just set up a small meeting area and let the dwarves marry and breed by themselves

20 starting adults, assuming it's a perfect ratio of male/female, and that each dwarf has a lover/etc, giving about 1 birth per year(the amount may be more, unsure), that'd get you... 120 dwarves by the 12th year of seclusion, then an ever increasing amount, unless you turn down the baby making init option, by year 12 the children born in year 1 will be grown up, and thus may start getting married/having kids, you would have an ENOURMOUS amount of adults by year 200, I shudder to think of the FPS of such a fort...
...
And now I want to try such a thing myself.

I've got 330 or so buggers running around in my current fort. The upside is with partial print, d##, everything off, most loose stone incorporated into the aboveground megacity and aquaduct, and hallway pathfinding as optimized as possible, I'm averaging 70 or so FPS. It helps that most people are just idling in the dining hall and don't have to path to anything important.

If you have any water sources at all, you can flood a VERY large region for farming. Since sealing yourself in for 200 years isn't advisable without a food source =P

In the dark dwarves mod,

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=34022.0

you could request dwarf and elf 'prisoners' from the deep elves (among other things) and they showed up as pets. So there must be a way to do it.

If you want to seriously roleplay, you could play the Humans mod. Then you won't need (much) alcohol.

You could have a reaction to forge tin cans... I think that 10 per bar is reasonable. Then, a reaction at the kitchen: Tin Can + Plump Helmet = Canned Plump Helmet.

Can you mod the raws to make tinned food never spoil?

Then you need to have a massive Perpetual Motion Device (aka The Generator) and a huge sewer system.

And a fat, lazy mayor who looks like Bill Murray.

Anything you order would be a pet, and I bet that the reason you can order them is because they have their own creature entry, and thus don't count as actual civilians.

And for your idea, Dakoth... you could make that reaction in the smelter, but I don't think you can make something not spoil.

IIRC, spoilage is a function of the vermin creatures that generate around stockpiles; barrels protect against some spoilage, and metal barrels protect better then wood.

I believe that stockpiled unprepared fish don't rot, so you could store your food in unprepared form and just queue up as many prepare fish orders as necessary for your immediate needs.

You could mod in a new catchable fish 'canned tuna' where preparing is opens the can... better yet, give it a 'shell' like turtles and cave lobsters have that can be melted down in for tin or aluminum.

AFAIK, the only reactions that you can mod are smelter reactions. So I'm afraid there will be no canned food.

What you can do however, is pretend.. Add this to item_food.txt in the raw/objects folder:

[ITEM_FOOD:ITEM_FOOD_TINS]
[NAME:tins]
[LEVEL:2]

That way, roughly half of all easy meals your cook makes will be 'tins'

Dwarves can live forever on plump helmets. Makes wine and food, and you can make prepared meals from the wine and seeds if you need to. Farming on stone is pretty simple if you have a water source like a river.
