Cowardly Dwarfs
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:21:14 pm »

Im attempting to fill a pit with goblins, iv been able to toss most of the ones i have captive in it but the problem is when my dwarfs hauling the goblins to the pit see the ones free in the pit they freak out and run away, is there any way i can set the area to make them no afraid of the goblins in the pit, or is this just something i have to deal with.

You just have to deal.

I have stairs in the middle of my pit and a retracting bridge to get to them.  I build the goblins' cage in the pit and link it to a lever, then retract the bridge and open the cage.

Think about the line-of-sight, and limit it.

Either have the hole at the top of the room at the far corner of both the room above and the room below (so they have less chance of seeing the li'l buggers), or have the drop further, to limit their vision even more.  Or both.

If you don't want to hurt them (yet), you could get fancy and have a trap door (retracting bridge) 1 level below, and the actual holding room 1 level below that.  The trick then is to have the bridge retract automatically and regularly to move them down to the lower room - not hard, just takes some ingenuity.

I think if you designate a pit over a hatch the dwarves will throw any goblins directly into the pit without opening the hatch, avoiding the line of sight issue. Haven't done it myself, though, so I don't know if it's accurate.

build a bridge over the pit and link it to raise/retract to a lever. with the bridge down/extended it blocks line of sight and your dwarves will toss people into the pit without interruption (assuming you dont try to pit thieves.)

I built a multi-level pit once. Gobbos were dropped from a walkway onto a retractable brdge, and once enough were sitting on the bridge, it retracted, and they all fell another eleven or so z's. If you just put one in at a time and dropped them individually, the dwarves wouldn't be scared away, though it would be slow going.
