Why are the Elves bringing me dead animals?
« on: October 15, 2009, 09:18:45 am »

Every time the Elves come I check and notice they bring loads of cages, some filled with live vermin, and others with animal corpses? There was also one time I was excited because I noticed that they were bringing me a tame Jaguar, but by the time they reached my trade depot it died.

Could it be because my map is in a cold area? And if there's nothing I can do about it, the elves are pretty much only good for their bones and target practice now, right?

The cold will kill any animals brought in. I have the same problem with my arctic colony.

Ah, alright. Will turning off temperature every spring fix this?

Don't look at it like the elves are bringing you dead animals. The elves are bringing you free meat, leather, bone, and fat.

Actually, since they're tame, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to butcher them, so all you'd be able to get out of the deal is bones and skulls.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've butchered dead animals from cages the humans traded me. I see no reason why elf animals would be treated differently.

Only tame animals you can't butcher are the one's that were pets to someone. Now if that someone dies, then you can butcher the pet, but not if the pet dies, where upon it's brought to the graveyard. Or was it the refuse stockpile?

Can't remember.

But yeah, you can butcher dead critters that are brought by traders right off the bat.

Not true - if the creature is a member of your civilization (i.e. you brought it with you on embark, purchased it from a caravan, or it was the child of one of the above) and it is killed, you cannot butcher it. Presumably, it works with purchases because the creature never actually belonged to you.
