Originally coined by Richard Dawkins to mean units of culture, but in the context of the internet it's just what he said - also includes things like Rickrolling, or certain pages, videos or gifs. When Kanye did his thing at the video awards or whatever, there was an instant flood of Kanye-interrupting memes.

For once, I found something where wikipedia is obviously wrong.

The earliest mention I saw of meme was in Foundation, written by Asimov in the 50s. In the intro to the first book publication of the trilogy, meme was used to refer to a self-contained mathematical representation of a cultural trend.
