More silly newb questions...

Hey all. First time post here. I have been fiddling with DF for a while now and am slowly getting to grips with it. Have started and abandoned about 20 forts so far. However, Im annoyed. I cannot figure out how to move up and down elevations. So, when I dig DOWN...I cant GET down...all I can see is the surface.

Can anyone help me?

Are you using a laptop or an actual computer ?
I'm using a loptop and I use the keys Ctrl+> to go up and Ctrl+< to go down.
You may want to change your key bindings to that.

also you cant get down till you designate a dining hall, statue garden, or a well as a meeting area

I think that was an attempt at a pun off the phrase "Get Down" as in to party.

No, your thinking of 'Get Up' as in 'Get Up and Party'
