Mysteries of the universe
« on: October 07, 2009, 12:35:15 pm »

There are some things the human mind cannot comprehend. We ask meaningless questions like "what happened before the big bang?" We puzzle over the meaning of life.

And then there are the enigmas produced by computers. For example, I just noticed that the word document of my resume has a tag saying "Author: Linda W Wong."

Needless to say, I never heard of anybody named that. And I believe that the presence of this tag on my resume falls into the category of eternal, unsolveable mysteries.

According to wikipedia, Linda Wong is a pornstar.  Maybe that's your calling, to do porn.

 :D

I honestly don't have porn on my computer. Hell, I haven't had a personal computer with internet access for the whole summer. That explanation's out...

Also, weirder yet, the resume's saved on my (also pron-free) flash drive...so I deleted the tag, then opened the flash drive to find it had returned! This time I created a new file and pasted the contents into it. Remains to be seen if it happens AGAIN. If it does, I'm calling in an exorcist.

I mean, I already knew that, but seems like a vision from heaven would be a better way to tell me huh?

Like it or not, that's a virus/trojan. It could have arrived somehow other than the internet, you know. Maybe someone decided to 'borrow' your flash drive and upload a few viruses.

It's certainly a better explanation than 'I wasn't on the internet, therefore a program is not doing it.'

It takes a program to do that, and we call those viruses. It's happening to your computer, therefore it must be on your computer. Either that or someone set up a self restoring tag.

Ballsack. I have been putting the thing on my dad's computer and he doesn't have the best history with internet security.

Of course, that STILL doesn't answer the question of why a virus would do that at all.

Microsoft Word probably gets the "author" tag from the current Windows username. Maybe you saved it to a flash drive while using a computer with that username?

Why would a virus do that? As a bad practical joke, probably.

You may want to double check, of course, to make sure it's not read-only. Vista seems to think it's a virus too sometimes. ;)

Yeah, some viruses do really retarded things, like fuck up your keyboard layout to say "<insert maker of virus here> is ossum" when you type the top line of your keyboard out.
