Pottery!
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:14:16 pm »

I don't know if anyone has brought this up or not (but I suspect that they have), we live in a generated world that has clay, kilns, and the ability to designate zones for the gathering of resources: specifically, to put sand in bags.  I'm not sure if this presents any programming problems with the way that the code is set up right now (no programmer am I), but if it could be arranged such that workers could gather clay for potters to turn into jars, mugs, possibly sculpture or (when the code for writing is added) tablets, I think that'd be pretty handy.  Just think: something else for your hard-working dwarfs to keep their liquor in.

This could be nice actually!  Let's say you have a map that has lots of silt, loam, and clay, but of course, no sand.  You would only need a fuel source (like magma) to run a pottery kiln, so just designate an area as "clay pickup," similar to "sand pickup" to put the clay into bags, and there you go, pottery!

Pottery is a somewhat common suggestion. Personally I'd be very keen to see it in. It doesn't get as much as support as some other suggestions, though, because the change isn't particularly functional.

Now that we have the ability to make custom workshops I'd love to see clay pottery in. There is a ton we could do with it.

Problem is in addition to the workshops we need the creation of a [CLAY SOURCE] tag or something.

I've talked to Toady about it in years past, and he seems all for the idea.   It'd give humans something to call their own, perhaps.

Mayhaps he was giving a gentle reminder instead of the clobbering of a mod.

But anyhow.... Pottery would add depth to the game.. It's pretty deep already I know, but instead of storing flour and such in bags you could also store it in pottery... would be a good addition.

I should clarify this. What I mean is that once we have pottery in place, it can become a component for many custom workshops. Many types of smelting, for example, was actually done using clay vessels. I'm sure there are many other places where we might want to use pottery.

Storage vessels for many food and drinks is another option (great for maps without much wood), and it would give us uses for many more materials. Kaolinite, for example, is used to make porcelain.

I'd be leery of making pottery required for smelting.  You won't be guaranteed clay on every map and having to worry about importing crucibles as well as making sure you have your first anvil will be a schlep.

Crucibles could be required only for alloys rather than straight smelting jobs or a crucible smelter could cause better yields.

So it wouldn't be needed to get a fort running but if you want the most out of your metal industry then it'd be something you'd need.

Keep in mind that pottery should be cheap, and therefore easy to bring with you at embark.

I thought the unnecessary and useless post had more to do with the pointing out the fact that anyone who spent half a minute with the search bar (or Armok forbid, the dev notes) would have realized how absolutely redundant, completely unnecessary, and entirely useless another topic on pottery was...

but then again, I usually read too much into these things. :-\

To add to the earlier suggestion of storing food in pottery, one should be able to use Large Clay Pots just like barrels. Now all we need is legendary dwarven ceramic armour...

Hopefully, in future versions (extra-hopefully in the coming release) we'll have more guarantees of being able to import useful things, like sand, bauxite, and clay.
