I can't make soap?!
« on: October 04, 2009, 09:49:25 am »

Oh dear god it's the end of the world. I can't make soap.

I have tons of buckets filled with lye, and I know I have lots of tallow, but it keeps cancelling the work order saying I need a lye bearing item. How I make soap?

The lye must be stored in barrels first, so you'll need a food stockpile that accepts lye and allows at least 1 barrel.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

How would I get them to put the lye in buckets into barrels?

Should be automatically done by the dwarves as they store the lye in the stockpile.

There's cheaper things to trade with the elves/humans that might work better...

I assume you mean "humans/dwarves" since, last I checked, trading soap to the elves would make them throw a hissy fit due to the fact that you had to burn trees into ashes to make the lye you used to make the soap.

I just had this problem in my current fort. It might just be a matter of being patient, but I just enabled carpentry on a few random layabouts and immigrants and set them to work making barrels so I'd have a surplus. If you're short of barrels or they're in high demand, this might help. Check on your amount of food haulers, too.

Yeah, megabeast fat aside, soapmaking is more a fun thing to do than profitable. But the opportunity to make bear tallow soap mega constructions surely stirs something in even the coldest hearts? Plus, you need to cut down a shedload of trees, and pissing off the elves is always good, at least once they've brought the bears and such.
