A noob with a few problems/questions...
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:41:46 am »

Alright, I started my first fortress and pretty much all is going well except a few things.

1) I have one miner (the first person my "u" list) who is about six level down underground, and he will not come back up. There are plenty of jobs to do, but he always says "no jobs" in that "u" menu. He just sits there, if I set a job for him to do DOWN THERE he will do it, but not up higher. Why can't I get him back up? I asume he will starve soon.

2) Again, in the "u" menu I have two people's names flashing, why is this? They have been flashing for some time now.

Thank you.

1) pathing problem? not stuck behind a recently constructed wall or de-constructed stair/ramp? checked all jobs are set? maybe try activating him as a military dwarf and stationing him up in the main fort?

2) dwarfs with legendary skills

Regarding the first problem: You may be using ramps when you should be using stairs. If you make a vertical column of ramps, each new ramp will undermine the one above it. Just a guess though.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

I'll look up how to do the military thing and try it once I get home. About the path finding thing, I have tried making him simply build stairs (I am sure I am using stairs) upwards but he will only build so far.

As I said, I'll try to get him to do the military thing, thanks.

When building constructions, it's possible that you accidentally chose a building material that isn't accessible from the mason's location - this is very easy to do when building a bridge, though with stairs I wouldn't expect it to be a problem.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

don't forget, when building stairs you should have:
Code: [Select]
V
X
.
.
X
^

where V is down stairs, X ... X is up/down stairs and ^ is up stairs

Umm no, it's units that are on fire.

'In the units list, the name of burning dwarves or creatures will flash, alternating quickly between yellow and red'

There's two different kinds of flashing, 'on fire' flashing is very easy to figure out, or at least, it was for me, legendary flashing is a bit harder to understand.

If you need to look really hard, you might want to consider using a different color scheme and/or adjusting your monitor's brightness/contrast, since even with the defaults it should be quite evident when a dwarf is legendary.

Legendary flashes relatively slow, maybe once/second, and is a diff shade of the same color; !on fire! is both extremely fast and changes color between yellow and red (or so).
