In my latest fortress (40d, no mods), I discovered a certain metal in the depths, and soon afterwards I got the "queen has arrived dressed as a peasant" message during a wave of migrants. However, the queen seemed to behave as an NPC--she was displayed as an @ (at) sign rather than a dwarf face, didn't show up at all in the Nobles menu, was listed as a Friendly in the Units menu, and, most curiously, just stood on the edge of the map where she first appeared for several seasons. She eventually came in to the barracks to meet with a foreign diplomat, then just stood there for several more seasons (warriors sparring around her all the while). Finally, during a siege, she charged out towards a goblin squadron, completely unarmed, and was immediately killed.

Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior in a monarch? The closest I could find in the official bug list was #218 ("the king/queen and consort are unusually placed on the 'u' screen") but that was just the tip of the iceberg. I've only gotten a monarch in one other fortress, and he behaved normally (although he arrived due to high population, not a certain metal).

Was she human or elven? If you have a king or queen that's of a different race, this sort of thing tends to happen. The only way to fix it is with a utility.

I saw no mention of race anywhere in the [v]iew screens, so I presume she was a dwarf. How would I be able to tell?

Check on the civ screen where it lists your leaders. (I'm not talking about the nobles screen)
