Oh, I know. My current fortress is going to be made entirely of cast obsidian and green glass, and I'm going to engrave every single surface (except floors submerged either in water or magma). Just because :D

So undorfy.

Not really. Magma will just destroy the floor engravings, anyway. I'm not sure about water, I'll have to test it.
Water doesn't, but if you have tower caps then they'll just grow and destroy the engravings.

Hmm, I'm going to have to figure a way to keep towercaps from growing, since there's underground water in the map, and I don't want my waterways to be clogged with mushrooms. I guess I'll just have to pave the waterways, instead of engraving them.

On the wiki, doesn't it say that towercaps can't block a full 7/7 tile of water, only amounts less than that? I can't find it myself, but I remember reading it somewhere.

Tiles of 7/7 water will not allow a tower-cap to mature to full size, but once the level drops to 6/7 it'll sprout to full size and start blocking water. This proved to be quite irritating in my fortress, where I had extended the underground river to go past my tower-cap farm only to have hundreds of tower-caps sprout in the river itself when I tried to irrigate. In the end, I drained most of the river and paved it with obsidian blocks - a long stretch still remains unpaved, but is instead covered by null stockpiles (which, conveniently, also prevent young tower-caps from maturing).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

They still should  be engraved to begin with.

As long as you make them last, most of my forts never make it past 5-8 years due to different circumstances.
