New nobles don't care about anything
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:02:17 pm »

I got a king for the first time today.  However, I realized some rather surprising things about the newcomers:  They include the king and his consort, an advisor, three children, a peasant, and several royal guards.  One of the first things I did was check the king's personality, so I could stock his room with pleasing items.  However, he has no listed tastes.  Just thoughts, relationships, affiliations, and personalities.  This is true for my king, his consort, and the advisor.  I was worried that they might not be dwarves, but they all need alcohol to get through the day, and for good measure I checked in legends, and at least the king is a dwarf.  Finally, I checked the children and peasant, and they do have preferences...but I soon realized that they are not related to any of the nobility.

This isn't of any ultimate consequence, but I'd like to know if this is a bug, or if there is a reason for this.  Maybe the king's kids died, and he decided to replace them with someone else's...

Well, my queen has NO likes or dislikes. Same with the king in my last fort.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

This is normal. There's an issue that results in the King/Queen not having any tastes (and thus no mandates). Didn't know it was also true for the advisor.

The peasant and children are probably just normal immigrants. Maybe the peasant is married to one of the guards?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

It seems to happen with all dwarves that were created during worldgen, which always includes the king+consort and advisor. This is also why they have significant skills when they arrive, rather than just being Novice or no-label in a few predictable skills - my current fort's Queen Consort was apparently a Fortress Guard back at the Mountainhome, so she shows up as a dark blue smiley (just like a fisherdwarf) with the profession "Guard" instead of cyan (like a legendary peasant but not flashing) with the profession "Queen Consort". She even arrived in full steel armor (plus two dresses and pairs of trousers), which she promptly dropped once her migrant status wore off.

Incidentally, is your Advisor also your (former) outpost liaison? My past 2 forts had this happen, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's just a coincidence or if it's guaranteed to happen, as well as what happens if the liaison is already dead.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
