The Limping Dragon
« on: September 20, 2009, 07:39:28 pm »

I recently stumbled across a delightful little story in legends mode, so I thought I'd share it.

The dragon Thali Fortunefurnace (which is a very nice name to begin with)
survived for the better part of four years with both of her front claws completely removed.

Her history, although unfortunately short (it fits on one page), is quite enjoyable to read:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It would be cool to encounter a dragon that's already missing two of its claws.
Do megabeasts ever spawn in Fortress mode with pre-existing wounds?

Oh yeah, with anti-climactic results. My first megabeast was a dragon with no eyes. It showed up, passed out, and was taken down by a swarm of wrestlers.

That is spectacular.

And, I can imagine, very disappointing.

The first dragon I met I managed to trap and tame.
Her name was Rano Fireyglows the Lustrous. She was great.

I fed her goblins.

This made me think of a Limping Dragon fighting style:
"To learn the ways of the Limping Dragon, you must first perfect fighting without your hands." *pulls out meat cleaver.*

Lol.

Or maybe the name of a tavern.

I'm a bit confused about the tamability of dragons and other megabeasts.  I know that if they kill one of your dwarves they will be considered tame but still kill your dwarves.  I know for a fact my dragon didn't kill a single dwarf in my fortress but taming it still makes it attack my dwarves.  If they have ever killed a dwarf will they always be hostile?

Yes, they will. This includes members of your civ in world gen, not just dwarves from your fort.

This is what I thought.  Looks like my dragon will have to be an uncontrollable but awesome flame thrower.

Cage it. Put the cage out in front of your main entrance. Surround the cage with fortifications, then with floodgates, then with channels. First, though, hook the cage to one lever and the floodgates to another. Pull the lever to remove the cage.

Now, when a siege comes, drop the floodgates and watch your dragon turn the invaders into goblin flambe.

Just remember to put the floodgates up before traders or, God help you, your own dwarves decide to walk by the cage...

If you intend to do this, I'd recommend making sure the dragon specification in the raws doesn't include the BUILDINGDESTROYER tag, unless you're looking for fun  :D

The dragon won't destroy the fortifications, so that wouldn't be an issue.

What would be an issue, though, is that dragons reportedly do not shoot fire at something to which they cannot path, so surrounding it with fortifications would just make it a very large pincushion for enemy archers.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Would a system like this work:

=======
+*-----=
+*-----=
+*-----=
+*-----=
=======

= Walls
- Ground
* Channel
+ Floodgates or drawbridge

If you want them to path, but not move, lock him in with Pet-impassable doors.

Not the fortifications. The floodgates.

Of course, that would require the dragon to try to move through them, and I'm not sure if a creature will try to path through a closed floodgate, even with BUILDINGDESTROYER.
