No caravan, no migrants?

So a Dwarf died during a goblin ambush on a caravan from my home civ and the caravan then decided to flee, fair enough.

The problem is I have had no Dwarven caravans or migrants since then, and this was about 3 years ago. The messages about nervous migrants have stopped, the liaison didn't die. Anything I can do to get them to come back?

This sounds like a bug unless you're under siege currently. I could be wrong, though.

I'm not under siege, at least there's been no announcement and I'm not at war with the elves. But I have been getting like 3-4 goblin ambushes a year.

The caravan should come back, even if it was ambushed. There aren't any merchants from your home civ stuck on the map, are there? No merchants with missing limbs, who can't get off the map or anything like that?

Having a merchant stuck on your map prevents arrival of the caravan from that merchant's civ.

There's a bull and a mule with the merchant tags, I'm not sure if they're from my civ or not, but they've been there for some time and aren't moving. They're probably the problem then. Maybe I should kill them off?

Yep, that would keep the caravan from coming. Get rid of them.

The caravan and migrants are linked. The caravan will come to your fortress and report the great wealth of your pitiful hovel, and then soapmakers and lyemakers and cheesemakers will come flooding your way.

I'm not certain if a caravan getting ambushed and driven off the map will prevent migration (I don't think it does), but two pack animals lingering around will certainly prevent both the caravan and migrants from arriving.
