Is there any advantage to using coins? One of my fortresses has reached the economy (disabled rent shortly thereafter) and everything seems to be functioning perfectly without coins.

No, there is no advantage to using coins. There are several disadvantages though, like dwarves spending all their time hauling tiny stacks of coins around and making a large mess of your fortress.

Dwarves are perfectly honest and can track their accounts perfectly, so there's no need to use coins, and most players don't.

The onset of dwarven economy is pretty much a sign that you should just throw everyone down 'pit and only let them out once they're legendary miners. Now nobody's actually effected by the economy and you can carry on as normal, with the bonus that all your haulers have increased agility and if there's ever a crisis, you can just re-enable mining on everyone, then draft them as they grab their picks and throw them into the fray.

In the interest of improving the wiki, what part had you doubting?

The economy can be run with coins, a locked vault of coins, or no coins at all. ... In the current versionv0.28.181.40d , it is strongly recommended that you either not make any coins at all, or at least not let your dwarves have access to those you do make. The reason for this is that coins are physical objects that need to be acquired, hauled, stored, and tidied up. Because individual accounts fluctuate, your dwarves may spend more and more of their work time strewing tiny coin piles all over the fortress!..

If you just don't solely assign dwarves professions you never use, you won't have to worry about the economy's affect on them, legendary or not.
