ok, I've downloaded Dwarf Fortress and run it, but it will not go above a very slow speed. I have a 5 year old Laptop, is there anyway to speed DF up on an old laptop?

O boy.

Ahh, you really should upgrade, DF is very CPU intensive.
That said....

Use the latest .40d#(current is .40d16) and fiddle around with the graphics options to find whatever works best.


In init.txt.

Turn off sound.
Set G_FPS_CAP to something low(10 or 12 is low, helps less with the latest 40d#).
Turn off VSYNC.
Set PRIORITY to HIGH
Turn off temperature, weather, economy, and caveins.

Gameplay work-arounds:
Use a small embark map(2x2 is best).
Keep a small number of dwarfs around, like 100 or less.
Keep a small number of animals alive and caged.
Kill every animal that doesn't have an immediate use.
Chasm or destroy junk(example: you don't need 100k stone, or probably even 1k stone).
Only build what you immediately need.
Generally, the less stuff the computer has to keep track of the better.
Eliminate flowing water and/or magma.

Fort design:
3 unit wide corridors and stairs are a must for even modest traffic areas.
Build things close together.
Allow for direct routs where possible.

I really want to upgrade. but my mom won't buy a new one unless I can pay for the whole thing.
