Needing some ideas/suggestions/help
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:27:25 pm »

I want to set up a grower locked away on his own with a well, and a small stockpile for food. I'm trying to find a way for him to be able to drop the food/move the food in a way that other dwarves can get ahold of it, but he still remains isolated from the others. I'm thinking a trapdoor setup to a lever or just a dug out hole or something.  Any ideas?

levers + floodgates can provide a "airlock" system.
If you have him with the "refuse hauling" labor enabled in his closed-off cell, you could have him dump his products on a retracting bridge with an activity zone. Then retract the bridge, and it falls a lever or two to where other dwarves can pick it up.
With this idea, you may however be spammed with dwarves in the non-locked zone not being able to path to the dump zone. Also, I don't know what happens to food if it falls.

EDIT: Be sure to give him a few pets he likes, too, for happiness. Also, if he drinks water from a well he will get an unhappy thought.

i thought drinking from a well gave a happy thought because the well can be finely crafted

It does. The better the quality the happier the thought. The quality is also contributed with how deep the mine shaft is. (For this reason, I make my water works and main cistern on the very bottom of the map.)

The issue I foresee with a sober dorf, is sobriety oddly enough. He eventually work slow to a crawl, and possible refuse to work? eventually. Not sure on that bit, I've always had drunk dorfs.

Simple. Use the z levels.
Dig a 1x1 channel in his enclosure, set a 2x1 dumping area over it (one tile of the dumping area must be on ground, that's why, 2x1). Your dwarf will now dump all things you order to be dumped to the level below, where it can be unforbidden, and hauled away by other dwarves. You can use the same technique one z-level above him, to dump food and booze for him to drink. Don't forget to unforbid it. Having it dropped in a food stockpile saves hauling for your grower.

What M'zz said.

For more info, see wiki "zone" (garbage/refuse).

Dump zones cannot be placed over open space - you need only one tile in the zone, on a floor adjacent to open space, for dwarves to throw stuff over the edge.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Okay, didn't know that. Good to know. They can be placed over open space however. I normally have a 3x3 dumping zone over a 1x1 channel in most of my forts.

No, actually, you can't.

You can designate the rectangle to overlap open space, but it doesn't show up as "garbage dump" tiles when you examine it with < i >.

The tiles over the land are the dumping zones.  If those are next to open space, the garbage gets tossed down there.

Compare to ponds, which are over the water/open space, specifically.

I think we are having a little confusion of words here.. ;)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This garbagedump, viewed by (i) , is over(lapping) the 1x1 channel in the middle.
The tile with the channel (where the cursor is at) does show as a garbage dump when viewing it with (i) , however, it does not count as a garbage dump tile, because a dwarf cannot stand on it.

Indeed, as Quietust said, a single tile garbage dump next to the channel also works.
A 1x1 zone on top of the channel tile can't be designated a garbage dump, but can be assigned a pit/pond, as Albedo correctly added.
