Three dwarves that are legendary in Wrestling, Shield, Armor, Crossbow, Axe, Sword, Mace, and Hammer.  I don't think they are versed in spears but I could be wrong, I'll have to get them trained in it if they aren't.

Did I mention I have 308 dwarves...

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

6 Marksdwarves, 4 are legendary. I have made basic steel plate and chain combination with shields. I will make them a new set when my armoursmith has some skill.

They are currently training till legendary with hammer so when they run out of ammo and pull out their steel crossbows they will be as badass as ever. I may train them in wrestling too.

I have 70 dwarves of which over 30 are currently children :(

Millitary? Hah! What millitary?
I almost never have more than 6 champions.
But, I recently started playing with the orc mod, so...  :-\

12 Member strong.

10 Champions wrestler that are getting trained in crossbow. Even with having 200+ bolts, they're mostly trained in hammer even with 15 properly firing ranges.

The other is swordmen, and hammer dorf.

50 Champion Hammerdwarfs (also Champion Wrestlers), 30 Champion Marksdwarfs (ditto), and 20 Champion Swordsdwarfs (more ditto).

Fort pop of 241.

That's going a bit overboard though, i usually have ~15 - 20 hammerdorfs and a similar number of Marksdwarfs, often i'll just have ~20 - 30 Hammer\Marksdwarfs.

I usually have 1 or 2 dwarves in most industries except metal, masons, and foodwhere I have a few more.  Then the rest go to pump training until legendary and then they get drafted.  I usually have about 15-20 in my military before I get bored and start a new fort.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

About 6-8 at the moment, and they've only just been conscripted from pumping duty. I've just been relying on my weapon traps, so far only one goblin's left arm has made it past them.

That would be as deadly to the wielder as to anyone else!  You'd sever your own arm at the first swing!  It's perfect!

I have a team of 4 "elite" champions, each armed with adamantine swords and armoured in full steel (this took a while).  My "light" unit, which consists of 6 dwarfs, has obsidian swords and steel chain armour.  I also have a bunch of marksdwarves for emergencies.

My military dorfs, just took out a dragon. My very first mega beast was choked to death.

On top of the dragon attack, there was a gobbo ambush.

I didn't loose a single dorf.

The dorf that got the killing blow on he dragon, is getting a kick ass room and has a pretty nice tomb.

On my last fortress, before I had to abandon it as the town liason decided to run through a forest fire, I had something like 18 marksdwarves of varying skill. It was orginally 3 marks dwarves to shoot those damn imps before they start another forest fire, and then I got a bunch of growers and soap makers, so i enlisted them to build up my defenses and keep them from going batshit insane because I cant provide the materials for their various moods.

It worked out alright. I had two goblin ambushes, one got curbstomped by a dwarven caravan guard (my marksdwarves were supposed to be on the seen, but they were slothing off somewhere.) then when the caravan guard was walking back, he spotted the second ambush, by then my guys got out to the front gate, and proceeded to blot out the sun with their bolts.

Apart from the fact that I had no liason that fortress was kinda fun.

My most recent fort had 15 chambion hammerdorfs and a few marksdorfs before it fell to the might of HFS.

pfff. about 50% of my dwarves are military. It starts small when the immigrants are useful, but as I need fewer and fewer dwarves out of any immigrant group, more and more get recruited.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
