Urdim needs a way to scare off potential predators.  Build a stonemason's workshop and a statue, then place it a little ways in front of the hut's door.

Urdim built a nice stone statue and put it just in reach of the chained cat. He felt a bit dizzy and took a sip of dwarven wine.

Urdim can't find any stairs around himself..

Urdim needs a fresh supply of mushrooms.  He digs a staircase down and builds a small "mushroom cellar" where he grows fresh produce.  Also to the side of the cellar he digs out a 3x3 area with a door and builds a distillery for when he gets too sober.
