Marksdwarf pathing problem
« on: September 07, 2009, 06:59:44 pm »

My marksdwarves get caught right here, every time. They can path out of this area, but as soon as I put them on duty, they get stuck here. And there's nothing special about this spot!
Is this a glitch? Please also don't pretend I'm a total noob. I checked the obvious stuff.

I've had this problem with some of my champions, too. I have two squads, each consisting of 5 dwarves. When standing down, they spar in the barracks, doing normal stuff. When activated, one squad goes to the stationed point, while the other runs off to the right, away from their stationed point. There are no patrol routes set... they just refuse to be stationed somewhere else.

you've tried the usual stuff and searched the usual routes.

so you've done the following:

- draft/undraft.
- changed squad settings undrafted.
- changed squad settings drafted (ie change who's in charge).
- split up squads entirely.
- dumped the bolts they currently have in their quivers.
- checked their hands.
- dumped a random item of clothing from them, just to shake 'em up a bit.
- left them for an age just to see what happens.
- built a support/lever/floortile collapser near them and shocked them with a bit of dust.
- check their feelings to see they aren't in mourning or in any other way dangerously unhappy/lost a pet/etc.

if you've done all of those, i got nothing...

I've noticed that occasionally a dwarf in a squad will "remember" a patrol route that is no longer active.  I'm not sure of the cause yet, but it's either because the commander of the squad had been slain, or just simple reassignment of squad organization.

The solution I used was to remove that dwarf into its own squad, cancel its patrol route, and then re-insert the dwarf back into the original squad to join his or her companions already marching.

It was a pain until I figured this out -- my military squads would be ordered into a group of monsters, only to have one or two dwarves actually show up for the fight.

I found this one out too. Apparently the game doesn't like to clear old patrol routes. If you set a squad (or soldier) for patrol then assign the squad (or soldier) as subordinate to another, they'll continue their old patrol route without regards to any new orders. This can get quite annoying. The new orders should override, and that'll be fixed, but for the moment, just unassign them all to their own squad and delete their patrol routes, then put them back into the same squad.
