"Mode switch failed"
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:46:43 pm »

When I start my game on fullscreen, or if I ever try to switch to full screen, it says "mode switch failed. Running in windowed mode."
This started when I downloaded Kobold Camp, which uses mayday graphics. I never converted my original folder to mayday. It happened as soon as KC was installed.
So I cleared all of my edits to the files and redownloaded DF. All I kept was my saves. It keeps doing this. How can I fix it?

IIRC, this means your screen in too small for the currently selected font/graphics etc.

Switching to a smaller tile/graphics set, changing the display's resolution, or changing the tile arrangement via the init files are the ways of fixing it.

If it -is- working in windowed mode, putting the identical numbers in where it says fullscreen is a brute force way of making sure you don't have too many rows or columns for the screen to display. Otherwise, you need to do math to figure out the appropriate number of tiles.

How can I see exactly what resolution I should have?
Also, I wanted to ask something else, too. I modded in the common_domestic animal rabbit, which was working great. However, they were too strong for my hunters (kobolds).
In the end I removed their attack tag, lowered their layering to 10, and removed the bodygloss tag. And they STILL kill my hunters, without an attack. I think it's weird that you can hurt someone when you aren't able to hurt anyone. How do I nerf them more?
I lowered their size to 1, too. This is ridiculous.

What are the dimensions of your screen?

The wiki pages on "Tileset" and "Custom grid" outline how to figure out the number of rows and columns you like best.
