Liason question
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:22:16 am »

For my current project, I need large quantities of Black Bronze. Since I can't make what I need, I'm importing a lot of it from the human and dwarven caravans. However, they don't seem to bring that much; even at maximum demand, they generally only have 3-4 bars each caravan. Note that I also usually request large amount of other, non-essential materials. Would lowering the demand on these cause them to bring more lack bronze? Is there any way to get more bronze?

Also, a second, unrelated question. For some reason my dwarves seem to like sleeping in my prison beds, and drinking booze from the prison stockpiles. Traffic areas don't help. Any way to get them to leave the prison stuff alone?

I don't know the answer, but you could also mass demand the reagents of black bronze and make some yourself too.

It's just plain hard to get metals from a caravan.

You could lock the doors to the prison area.

If possible, when trading, offer a lot more than you request.  I generally try to pay twice what the traders say their goods are worth.  This will quickly make the traders and their civs *love* you, and they will send huge caravans with large amounts of whatever you ask for.  After a year or two I usually get five-wagon caravans.

Cooked booze, even without a trained cook, is an easy and valuable trade good.  It's kinda sploity though and I hope boozecooking gets removed or nerfed eventually.

But then the prisoners can't get in...

As far as the trade thing, I was aware of the large profits=more stuff, but it doesn't seem to be working fast enough. Maxing out orders of Gold, Silver, Copper and Black Bronze just gets me an extra 2 bars per caravan - not nearly enough.

It's just plain hard to get metals from a caravan.
For my megaproject I've been assigning all my Electrum to 'tip' the quarried out obelisks (and pyramid).  In seven dwarf-years of activity, I've only been able to obtain {...does brief calculation...} 15-20 bars of the stuff form the human and dwarven caravans, even after making mid-to-high level requests.  And last time I checked I was getting 7-10 wagons from the humans, as well as pack animals.

Noting that I haven't (discovered) proper precursor deposits or specifically requested the components, and until I tap the magmapipe that I know is there I'm holding back on the active metal industry anyway, apart from fulfilling nobility requests.  (It's not so much that I don't have the wood, more that I'm humoring the elves and can't currently use superfluous wooden furniture from the early days as fuel. :))

IRT Rolon: Might try that idea, myself.  I've got loads of junk I want to get rid of, and I've been thinking of gifting a few score of my masterworked mechanisms to the elves, or whatever they can handle after I've traded everything worthwhile from them (including the oversized clothing that matches the human/dwarf trading bonuses).  I'll try some pure gifting and mix in some 200% profiteering for them.  Even the elves (who I know I won't get electrum from).  For most of the time I've been getting (and taking advantage of) 1:1 bartering values without complaints, even though I could spare mountains of Kobold and Goblin clothing, rock instruments, mugs and other items of massive availability.
