There are four kinds of clowns:
!!Clowns!!, which burn really hot
☼Clowns☼, which have a lot of appendages
~Clowns~, which swim in water
and normal Clowns, which are the best kind of all

Turn off temperature unless you want the clowns to turn your dwarves into !!dwarves!! and explode your booze stockpile.

pfff. Don't be such a pussy, only small children are scared of spirits of fun. Clowns of all types can easily be taken out with enough war elephants :D
