Hello Everybody
« on: September 07, 2009, 12:44:13 pm »

Hello everyone,

My name is Fruitpunch. I recently started playing (and becoming addicted :D) to dwarf fortress. I have been running my fortress for a few days now. I think I have been doing a pretty decent job for my first time through but I have a few questions.

My biggest question is about military. Whenever a trader comes they are usually followed by a few Kobolds. I have three soldiers out of 29 dwarves, but I have no idea how to fight the Kobolds whenever they begin to take my stuff.

My second question involves magma. Does magma show up on the map or must you discover it like the way you discover rock and stone? My entire civilization is based of off rock because I have no magma to burn coal and I used all of my wood already.

The problem about Kobolds is that they are cowards, and they are slightly faster than an unskilled dwarf.
To kill a kobold you have to be lucky enough to have a dwarf in it's close vicinity that is at least 'agile', so it can catch up with the fleeing thief.
If so, draft that dwarf. You need no military skills to kill a kobold once you can get in range.
It might get a lucky strike though, but I've never seen that.
The dwarf will get a minor unhappy thought from being drafted, nothing to worry about unless he was unhappy already.

Magma.. Well. First thing, you must have picked an embark site that actually HAS magma.
There are 2 types of magma; magma pools and magma pipes.
Pools are usually a few z-levels deep. I don't know if they can pierce the surface. Whenever I played with magma pools, I had to find them by digging. Magma pools do NOT refill.
Magma pipes go all the way to the bottom of the map and do refill. So far, I've had all magma pipes I've played with pierce the surface, meaning they are visible the moment you embark. I play very flat maps though, so it's possible that they do not always pierce the surface and will have to be discovered.

Also, welcome to the forums  :)

Well it seems my map has no magma pools on it. Is it possible to get magma pipes on a map without magma on your maps? If so how?

And thanks for the welcome.

It is not possible to get magma on a map that lacks it once you embarked.
Although there have been some crazy experiments with people building magma reservoirs on the edge of a map that has a magma pipe, and levers, then abandon the fortress and go into adventure mode to pull the lever, spreading the magma further. Don't know how well that worked out.

Nope. There are two sources, as he mentioned. These are both physical features on the map; if they are not on the map to start out, they will never be on the map. Ever. Note that magma pools work for setting up forges, because even though they have a finite supply, forges do not use up magma, they simply need to be built over it. However, you can't make a magma moat or cast obsidian with a pool(at least, not very well).

Hello everyone,

My name is Fruitpunch.

Wow - welcome - but don't use your real name on the boards - bad plan in general. (you have some cruel parents.)

Your map is the one you choose at embark - dwarves can't terraform it to that extent later.

Try surfing around on the wiki - lots of info and answers to questions you haven't thought to ask yet.

My real name isn't Fruitpunch

Fruitpunch is a super sugary drink of death :D

Also one more question. Is it possible to trade furniture goods such as tables?

also about kobolds, what you might want to do is set up a restraint near your entrance and put a war dog on it. Basically allowing the dog the chance to sniff out the thief before he gets to your goods.

Ignore him, lol.

Yes you can trade furniture but they are pretty heavy.

Mechanisms are a pretty good trade, and so are stone crafts.
