Make a game. It can give a hell lot of motivation. That's how I learned every programming language (cept the website ones). I also used to use C to make a calculator for homework and a mini chat device. Oh, and my first serious tool in C++ was something to generate random towns from D&D tables and stuff. Go with something you like that's tedious by hand :P

I'm going to try and find a book at my libary. Because books tend to (though not always)be better quality and reading lots of text on screen makes me sleepy. I kid you not.
