Well, I'm not sure it physically destroy computer chips, just trouble the electromagnetic flux. But I'm not a specialist, so I'm just guessing.

An electromagnetic field that has no real impact on people (we think) can totally fuck up electronics, but it's child's play to harden electronic devices against even nuclear grade EMF's.

However, bring a laptop into space, and it will work. It might be degraded and eventually fail, yes, but that'd be over a period of weeks or months (barring solar storms). Obviously, that's still not good enough for NASA.

Because frankly, if I have to trust the thing to take me from orbit back to landing safely, I don't trust anything as new as Leopard, let alone something like Windows 7 or Snow Leopard.
