Iku could only be considered irregular because, if it followed the rules, its te form would be iite, but it's actually ite or itte. Pretty sure it's the former.

what pattern the verb follows, assuming that applies to other languages.
regular verbs follow common patterns.
irregular verbs do whatever they feel like.

so the less irregular words there are, the less words you have to remember in all their forms

Pretty much, but it quickly becomes memorized.
English is full of odd verbs that slip by unnoticed.

I was offered a course in Japanese (could be good as I could claim that my anime watching is educational rather than just a frivilous waste of time) but I'm already learning French, German and Latin, and I'm just not that great at languages.
