Items shouldn't take several months to burn up. I mean a silk thong can only provide so much fuel for a fire! The ground outside after my the demons were released took less time to return to normal then most of my items to burn out.

Dwarven craftmanship is just that good.  Although it shouldn't be, and likely won't in future versions.

Dwarves who are carrying burning items should drop them sooner.  Every time they die they die the turn after dropping whatever burning item they were hauling.
