If only dwarves could wrestle down trees...  (it might take a while, but I imagine they could do it!)

I usually do this with a battle axe, but other than that it's a lot of fun. A hunter can bring in a ton of leather, bone, and skulls to make crafts out of, and if you get lucky enough to get your hands on a rope reed you can make major money farming for cloth.

I would suggest a few things to add to this though. Gathering is an incredible source of food and other money, though you won't be able to do dyeing without having wood for a bucket and barrels. Set your stockpiles to reject hide root, if you don't have barrels you'll be wasting space. Cooking stacks of food will produce the most value since you don't need fuel to cook with (lucky that, otherwise you'd be selling raw food which has crap value) and will allow you to store your food in more economic spaces. Fishing can produce a good quantity of bone and shell from turtles.

The hardest part with this challenge is going to be unhappy thoughts. Dwarves will be drinking water, sleeping outside, eating without a table, and won't really have anything to admire unless they happen to like one of the pack animals you don't slaughter. All it will take is a little push, like the death of the hunter or an injury, to set off a nasty tantrum spiral.

As an added bonus, the hunter will be an expert marksdwarf for when you no longer need a hunter. I've seen my former hunter run off ambushes solo, they're pretty good.

That reminds me: I learned, when doing this challenge, that you can take the bones from the fish you're eating, and craft not only bolts, but also bone crossbows.  This is what makes hunting feasible.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

You start with two pack animals. One becomes a crossbow and armor, the other becomes bolts and a helm or quiver. After that, the hunter should be able to bring in a fairly good supply of meat and bone.

Man i tried this challenge several times in a bid to up the difficulty curve (using the "no points" where you get nothing at all).

I even embarked in a "rocky wasteland" figuring id be hard pressed to find even plants there, but I did so 1 wood became a barrel and the other 2 rotated between the various workshops.

Once i've established my food/drink and my fort is well on its way to becoming prosperous i get bored usually =s
