It might be a feature that dwarves drop whatever they're doing when giving birth, but if that happens to cause a cave-in it seems tragic enough to be a bug...

Here's from the log:

A section of the cavern has collapsed!
Amost Keskalzat, Baby has drowned.
Unib Likotelis, Mason has given birth to a boy.
Eshtƒn Bomrekkanzud, Baby has drowned.
Unib Likotelis, Mason has drowned.

As the title suggests, this happened while constructing a floor over a channel. Unib had given birth before, and was carrying Baby Amost. The bodies of all three were found in the channel beneath the working site.

Sounds more like a case of extremely bad timing and bad luck than a bug.

It's just one of those one in a billion things that simply happen.

Also happens when adjacent to an open space. When a baby is born, it is spawned in a tile next to the mother.

If that tile happens to be an open space above the magma pool or over the bottomless pit...well....oops!

I mean the timing was the one in a million thing.

I guess the timing thing could be true as well.

Probably something that could be connected to a feature of having the mothers to first go into labor and trying to head to their room bedroom before the actual birth, but I guess that's a matter for another section of the forum.

At least she spared the babies the trouble of having to try to end themselves. Maybe for the best, as they where named Whipconvent and Shootstabbed.

Wait, what caused the cave-in?  A mere interruption of construction shouldn't have.  Was the floor hanging off a bridge or something?

The cave-in was likely was caused them all to drown -- dwarves enveloped in cave-in dust tend to get knocked around, potentially into open space.  The fact that she gave birth AFTER falling into the water was likely just a coincidence.

You probably designated some flooring to be placed which was accessible only from a bridge or grating (at least temporarily). Dwarves are none too intelligent and will attempt to place such a flooring, even though it's unsupported and collapses immediately. This is a known problem. Never allow your dwarves to attempt to place a constructed floor, wall, stairway, etc. Unless it would be supported by connection to an adjecent construction or natural rock to the North, South, East, West, above (when placing walls), or below (placing floors, etc).

To reiterate, bridges, grates, and other "building" constructions made via the b'uild menu, do not support weight or connect constructions to the wall. Only constructions made through the b'uild->C'onstructions menu will do~
