Barrels vs casks and a mining suggestion
« on: August 24, 2006, 03:37:00 am »

I'd like to be able to make liquid-only barrels (casks).  With food and drink being shared by the same container type, it becomes difficult to brew any drinks.  Past a certain point in food production, all of my barrels are instantly snatched up to put seeds or plants in.  I think being able to have your carpenters make liquid only casks would make brewing a lot less cumbersome.

Being able to designate between having my highest ranking miners dig or my lowest ranking ones dig would be great.  I tend to use higher ranking ones to get ore and lower ranking ones to produce less stone when expanding.  Right now to do this, I have to unassign/reassign a bunch of miners every time.

Also, I know this is already in the bloat section, but I'm really looking forward to some way to assign a personal workshop to a single person, so only he can use it.  Similar to assigning a dining room to a specific person.  This would really help with making the best items I can or leveling a specific person's crafting skill without constantly switching everyone's labor settings.

And according to my college experience, casks (kegs) would not have to be built out of wood.  That would make them more expensive to build (charcoal x2 for metalsmithing) but it would guarantee an adequate supply of alcohol.

Great idea.

Might be worth pointing out that barrels don't have to be built out of wood, either (like right now, it's in the game already.) It's bins and beds that you can only make out of wood.

That said, I'm totally for seperate containers for my booze and my food.

Dwarf foreman can help with the mining thing; the other two are implemented (one directly, the other indirectly using the stockpile settings).

Another update of note is that we have metal bins now as well.

Why don't you just disallow barrels in your seed and plant stockpiles?

Well what id like to suggest is that there be crates for dry goods, and then barrels for liquids, make things a lot easier  :)

also, realistically, barrels and crates should be stackable... I don't know how toady missed that  :(

If it were August 2006, I think it would also be impossible.  Can't recall exactly.
