Forced conscription?
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:09:43 pm »

So I'm doing little dwarfly things in my fortress when I get the message "Squad 'The Clasps of Calling'" has been disbanded.

At first I think, oh no! He got eaten by a carp after ignoring my orders not to go near the river, or we got roasted by an imp when I ordered him to shut up and go build that darn wall. But doesn't it usually say "demolished" when a squad has been wiped out?

So I look through my unit list... he's still alive, he's just been made a fortress guard. Can dwarves become guards like that without being ordered to?

Is your fort named Stalingrad or New Orleans?

Maybe some weird result of being elected to mayor?

My guess would be you were working the hotkeys so fast you mucked it up somewhere.
You mentioned building a wall: you do that using b -> C -> w.

C is also the hotkey for Fortress Guard. So if you happened to be in the wrong mode (say, the view unit mode) and you pressed the key sequence above, you'd end up accidentally conscripting the unit you were viewing.
