Yay! After this, I think bedroom expanding would be a good idea to stop the unhappy thoughts from sleeping on the ground.

21st Timber, 803, Late Autumn.

Fairly uneventful report, traders came and went.  We bought out their supplies of food, wood, and some cloth for the bones, skulls, and unfit equipment of the orcs.

A band of goblins made a halfhearted attempt at raiding the caravan but were driven off by one of its guards.  I calculated the wealth of our fortress at over 1,000,000☼, so greed from the more savage races is only to be expected.

Fireheart and Skriz have been put on full military training, however Boddin managed to reach legendary wrestler first and now wears the artifact armor.

The replacement engraver now works slowly on the new housing development, there will be room for all the dwarves to have individual rooms and several more.

Encouraged by the success of the defence system it is now being upgraded with steel spike all across the floor. Some of the melee dwarves complain that this could make their job too easy, but cage traps will be installed, and we will soon be conducting arena fights for their benefit and training.

Orc invasion, they still can't understand the nuances of pressure plates, or the connection to space or gravity.

Everett received a light neck injury and and mangled limb from wrestling an imp into a cage trap. It now sits in his room as decoration while he heals.

We received a elven traders that we bought a giant eagle and wolf from, plus various stacks of cloth.  A immigrant wave arrives shortly thereafter, and one of its members immediately rushed inside to seize the forges. They produced a beautifully worked steel table, valued at just over a hundred thousand ☼.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goblins unexpectedly fell upon our masons working at improving the siege defences, they brought bowmen and attacked on the open field.  A single newly immigrated craftsdwarf was killed before the alarm could be sounded. Boddin bravely rushed upon the goblins alone and fatally injured all but a handful.  They eventually dragged him down and beat him unconscious.  Kolir arrived on the battlements only in time to shoot the creatures away from his dying body.

RIP, Boddin Wardedpick, Champion.  Died, 18th Haematite, 804 at the hands of the goblin horde.

Any preferences as to burial method? Kolir is marked as your lover and for some reason isn't battle hardened yet, so magma burial is kind of out of the question.  I'm fairly sure I can come up with a masterwork steel or aluminum coffin however, and you have your pick of places around the fortress for burial sites.

Get the masons to work: build a large "watertower" type of structure to act as his tomb, overlooking the landscape, waiting for the day the Goblins come back.  Pity that armor didn't help much.  How many did he take down with him?  Make their skulls into totems and include those in the Tombtower.

Use supports instead of solid pillars to hold it up.  If the Goblins come back, you can crush them, and when Kolir is properly hardened, you can dig out a magma-well under it and do the proper funeral.  Make sure he has a steel coffin, it'll survive the magma.

How well did my spikes work?

Poor Boddin. Right after he got that artifact iron armour too  :'( He went out fighting as a true dwarf would though. As for burial, Shima's idea sounds excellent.  Put it right in front of the fortress (if possible) and maybe connect an overhead entrance from the ramparts to it. You don't have to make it too big. You could expand the tomb as well, with each death of a named dwarf if the owner of that dwarf doesn't have any preferences as to burial. Long live Tholtig Etur!

Sorry, no update today, too much stuff going on.

Sounds like a good idea for the tombs though.

Shima: Afraid your spikes aren't done being constructed yet, though the few activated ones seem to have at least increased pools of orc blood along the tunnels by quite a bit. I'll try to get a movie in the next siege.
