Make dwarves a little less idiotic when digging channels
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:09:00 am »

Is it just me or do dwarves almost always dig themselves onto a single isolated tile whenever they dig large rectangular channels?

I recently had my broker do this to themselves and of course the idiot mason was too busy carrying items around and partying to build the floor he needed to escape, so I made him mine his way out through the ice I was trying to drop and turn into water.  In order to hydrate another miner who had gotten a red wound from a cave in caused when he tried to mine under another idiot channeler who'd trapped himself.  Unfortunately by that point he was dehydrated, starving, and most importantly, On Break.  He never went back to work.

Just designate one row at a time.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Yeah, you'd think that would work, but if you're channeling around something more often than not they'll stand on the side that's supposed to fall, like they know it, and are retarded gravity junkies.

Dig upward ramps one Z level down.  Problem solved.

There are certain angles which are preferable to complete tasks from - the complete listing's in the wiki, but you're safe if you just remember that dwarves generally like to complete building/mining jobs from the west.

Oh well, at least there's a workaround.

There's always a workaround.

If you're building a pit and want the top floor drop nice and smashy, you could use a mini-detonator (say a support with a rewall on top) to blast through a thin piece of flooring that happens to be the last tile supporting the thing.
