Your songs are still there. But, you're going to have to find your original Itunes Library File. Yes, it should be on your computer.

EDIT: I just found mine, on vista:

C:/Users/USERNAME/Music/Itunes

The Itunes library file should be there, at least, unless you somehow deleted it.

There are a couple of files in My Music/Itunes called Library.itl, but double clicking or dragging onto iTunes do nothing.

Ok... lets see if I can get this right (or remember it correctly..)

Plug in your iPod, go into the iPod tab thing, and check the option for manually managing music.
Then, to the left of the tab, there is an arrow. Double single click that, it should bring down a list of files inside it. Copy paste those back into your library.
