I want to see a dwarf heartbroken because he or she lost his significant other through death, infidelity, or divorce.  Not because I want to inflict pain on imaginary characters in a virtual reality, but because anything less would not be up to the Dwarf Fortress standard.

Assuming the culture allows such things in the first place. Divorce wasn't too hot back in the 1400s

I want to see a dwarf largely inconvenienced because he or she lost his significant other through death...

This already happens.

Adding nontraditional sexuality is the road to Fable II's portrayal of a fantasy world, where children are shot in the face, the hero never dies, and happiness is a fart away.  Also, the good guys have blue eyes, blond hair, and vegetarian diets.

...Seriously, I can't say I'd care either way, but I'm not sure how much it adds to the gameplay (at least as far as dorf mode goes).  Obviously, relationships need to be expanded for adventure mode to feel like something more than relationship whack-a-mole.  I just can't say I'd feel inclined to pause the game just to sort out who is screwing who.  Offices (like the priests) should be in place to take care of most grievances without direct player interaction.

It happened on occasion, in particular when the man didn't perform his marital duty. (Yes, that one). The mortality rate was high enough, and the marriages late enough, that the average duration of marriage was around 10 years, more or less like today.

I'm pretty sure children get shot in the face on a regular basis in DF.
