Sometimes, in history, you gotta go with what you've got.  And that often means drawing very unlikely Holmes esque connections.

i dunno why, but that seems like a very bad thing to broadcast on public tv.

Oh.  So that's why they assumed the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 meant the end of the work; it was unlikely to be the real answer!

Well, history is sometimes like trying to work out what happened from the wreckage of a car crash.  Sure, you can see what's left over, but what originally happened?  Who's fault was it?  You can take witness statements, but are they lying?  Have they been deceived?  Have they simply been asked too long after the event?  Could they be biased?  Threatened?  Attempting to cover someone else up?

As you go further back in time you can get other restraints, which make it more akin to trying to work out what happened in a car crash when both cars fell off a cliff.

Which means that history is always far from an exact science.
