Cave Spider bites, permanent or wears off eventually?
« on: August 10, 2009, 04:00:43 pm »

Basically I'm asking whether the poison is there permanently and it randomly makes the afflicted dwarf stunned, or does it wear off over time and stop eventually? I know there is an antivenin, but I found out last night that you need glass flasks.....and I'm on a sandless map.

Too bad we can't import sand yet (just how viable it is as a trade good is questionable though) and I know I could just mod in all soil types except for the deep ocean ones to be sand harvestable.

I'm asking because a few of my dwarves have gotten this and since I don't want anybody slowed down by this, I am considering killing those few. Except for the Geoengineer (mason) as it takes quite a while to train more legendary masons. The others are a kid somewhere and a forgeworker who's skills are average and I can afford losing that one. The effect of the spider bite seems to lessen over time, but not sure.

Edit: I did look at the wiki, but it's not clear on whether the effects wear off over time or ir is permanent (as in it's always going to do the stun). Logic states that the antivenin would do it, but there's no sand on the map.

Antivenin is actually a useless trade good.

As far as I know, the bites wear off over time once someone recovers. I'm not sure, though; I've only had one bite, and that may have been the leatherworker who fell into the magma pipe.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Oh I see. Would have made sense if the antivenin was actually useful though.

It may be at some point in the future.  Maybe with the advent of "doctors" or "magic" - who knows?

Toady has a LOT of "plot threads" that have not been developed, and some may never be.  But if and when, they're waiting.

Well, Toady's expanding the venom/ poison system considerably in the next release (whenever that may be). Perhaps antivenin will be applied then as well.

I've been too damn busy with a mafia game to answer these questions.

The effect is permanent. You can go into creature_subterranean.txt and temporarily remove the brackets around [EXTRACT_PERMANENT] under the entry for cave spider if you want the effect to go away.
