Particularly fond of the last paragraph on DF:
Quote
It's doubtful Dwarf Fortress, even when complete, will become a mainstream phenomenon. But it's certain that nobody working in games in the coming decades will do so without the spectre of DF hovering over them. It's the Finnegan's Wake of video games.

The article sounds more like a list of his personal favorites or a 'first of' list for various genres rather then a well researched list of the best games.

Glad to see df getting some press though!

Definitely it's more about genre-defining titles than most popular, most critically acclaimed or favorite games.

Unexpected.  Though not undeserved.

And the only one on that list that will be eligible for "Best video games of the past decade" 10 years from now.

It's worth noting that the two screenshots used were from the Visual Fortress thread, and the same damn promo shot of the 2D version used in every other DF review, which is now like three years old.

"Finnegan's Wake of video games" is a pretty good way of putting it though.

That's a pretty bad list.

Finnegan's Wake... heh.  I got inspired to check it out after the comparison.  It's a book that, unlike the pedestrian unreadability of technical manuals, aggressively flaunts its confusion in a challenge to literature enthusiasts.  Toady's aims are different from Joyce's though.  But, still, it is a decent comparison currently (and probably will still be until after the interface arc.)

Musing about the list, I'd swap out Halo 2 and Brain Age with World of Warcraft and Halo.

I'd say many of these fit perfectly on the list, they're the games that have really had the most influence on the genres they're in for the recent and forseeable games. Only one that really perplexes me is Brain Age.

Halo 2 is noteable over Halo 1 because of the huge section where you play as your enemy and the huge online following.

I knew someone else would notice that 2D shot.  Its slightly annoying that articles just keep using it, but to be fair, Toady hasn't updated the screenshots page in forever.

Personally I find myself missing 2D on occasion, at least back then you knew which way you were digging at all times, and where outside invaders would come from.

We still know these; you dig down and invaders come from the edges.
