My first homebrew creature, to guard against carp
« on: July 30, 2009, 06:17:05 pm »

I think modding this game might be as fun as playing it. I got it in my head that I wanted a creature to protect my retarded dwarves from lamprey attacks. Here is what I came up with. I generated a world with the creature just fine, and it is on the embark screen. Going to test it after dinner. It is a bit beefier than a dog, and more costly. Amphibious as well, no more pulling my poor dwarves into the water, at least not if they have a pet....Mantis Shrimp! I am sure that it probably has a bug or two.

[CREATURE:MANTIS_SHRIMP]
[NAME:mantis shrimp:mantis shrimps:mantis shrimp]
[TILE:'M'][COLOR:0:2:6]
[PETVALUE:60][NATURAL]
[LARGE_CAVERIVER]
[COMMON_DOMESTIC][trAINABLE][PET]
[CHITIN]
[PREFSTRING:iridescent carapace]
[PREFSTRING:spearlike limbs]
[BODY:BASIC_2PARTBODY:BASIC_HEAD:FRONT_BODY_THORAX:REAR_BODY_TAIL:2EYES:2LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:BRAIN:MOUTH:]
[BODYGLOSS:claw]
[SIZE:6]
[MAXAGE:10:20]
[ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:CLAW:claws:claws:2:6:PIERCE]
[CHILD:1][CHILDNAME:thumbsplitter:thumbsplitters]
[FAT:1]
[AMPHIBIOUS]
[NOBONES]
[PEARL]
[NOSKULL]
[DIURNAL]
[HASSHELL]
[STANDARD_FLESH]
[HOMEOTHERM:10070]
[LAYERING:100]
[SWIMS_INNATE][SWIM_SPEED:3500]
[MUNDANE]

Tell me if you think it will work.

How would dwarves get them if they live on a mountain? Cave shrimp would be more likely.

I considered that, but I didn't want a 3 word name. 2 is too much, but I needed it.

Yes it is...but cave shrimp sounds like something you'd barbecue. Mantis Shrimps are badass.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantis_shrimp . But if it really offends your sensibilities, you could change it.

I have no idea how [PEARL] works. I saw it in the tags article on the wiki. I am looking forward to finding out.

I prefer the Badass Shrimp or Coconut Crab

How would dwarves get Coconut Crabs if they live on a mountain? Cave crabs would be more likely.

The  coconut crab would be carried by a swallow
No not a cave swallow but a GIANT swallow
How would it carry it?
It could grip it by the shell
A 100 pound bird cannot carry a 150 pound crab
Unless two of them carried it
What grip it by the claws?
The problem is that Giant swallows are non migratory.
*sigh*

You might want to increase their speed to something more reasonable; lower numbers are better, and carp have [SWIM_SPEED:500].

[PEARL] means that a creature leaves a pearl behind when you eat it, much the same as shells. This hasn't been implemented yet, though, so it is approximately the same as the [HORN] tag and has no real effect as of now.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

You may want to make it so it has more than one “thumb splitter” when it breeds, but other than that it looks good.
