Memory Dump Problem?
« on: August 05, 2009, 09:42:49 pm »

With my last few fortresses I've noticed that the game will occasionally slow down to 30-40 FPS(From 80, where it's capped), and will 'stick' there, not going back up to 80. However, when I save the game, exit the application, then relaunch, it's back at 80, and stays at 80 for well over half and hour before it starts dropping again. I have a CPU monitor on my screen and when DF the fort is first launched, my CPU is running at ~50%. When the FPS starts dropping, it's running at 100%. I'm wondering if something is causing the application to get stuck, which ties up extra processing power for doing useless tasks?

Ive noticed the same thing.

Its quite strange as my computer usually runs DF on 100+ ( kind of fluctuates up to 102 even though the cap is 100 ???)

I have a very powerfull computer although i am running vista.

I think water pathing may have something to do with it but im probibly wrong.

I guess you found a memory leak!

Easy to make mistakes in C/C++ that causes memory to pile up unnoticed.

Today should find the cause of the memory leak. Although I think some testing would help to track what is causing it, maybe water flows? Atom-smashing bridges? Death? Items being hauled? etc.

If you think it's actually a subtle bug (and it sounds like it), then post it in the "bugs" subforum.
