trees don't burn?
« on: August 07, 2009, 02:16:42 pm »

I'm in the middle of a wild fire caused by a fire imp. When I saw it start my first thought was about elves.  But for some strange reason, the trees won't burn down. Is this a bug or a programing oversight?

Have you ever actually been in a forest that has recently had a fire go through?  In most cases the larger trees all survive with some damage to the lower branches.  I assume that since the trees that survive a fire in DF are the same trees we chop down for logs that they are large enough to survive the fires like in real life.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

Trees just don't burn because the fire never gets to the same location as the trees, because trees are solid and will not let anything on their tile.

For fires, a tree acts the same as a wall.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Fire to trees is like pruning to a rose bush in lots of cases.

Too bad the Forest Service didn't figure that out for nearly a century and suppressed natural wildfires causing a huge amount of fuel to build up, which is then fatal to trees.

(my apologies for the non-DF rant)

Still doesn't explain why the trees don't burn up with magma. Just one of the few things that can't be solved by the use of magma.

I guess it is more of a programming oversight.

I'd like to see trees fleshed out a bit more though, old big trees should turn up a few more wood logs than what one can get from young brand new trees. Especially would like to see proper underground forest farming.

And maybe some 1000 year old named trees, the chopping down of which would lead to instant war with the elves.

And then tree people! And monkeys living in trees! And monkeys living in tree people! And when the tree people siege you (cause you're cutting down their fifth cousin or something) the monkeys pour out to steal things!

Good god, the trees are attacking!
Ah! Monkeys, everywhere!
