Service Record & Medals

It would be nice if there was a way to expand the (k)ills portion of a militia member to include siege campaigns they've survived, and perhaps a track of their active training time and conscription dates or discharge dates.

Also, it would be neat to have the militia commander in charge of assigning medals to various dwarves for heroism in battle. Militia members could also earn medals for long service, fighting during a campaign, and receiving wounds in battle (Purple Heart). This could also be expanded to have the various squads have Unit Awards/Banners assigned to distinguished squads so that members joining can know the battle history of a Squad they join.

I like it. It would be a nice use for your artefact Rope Reed Fiber Amulets! Or your officers could mandate production of medals after a siege.

There would be associated mood changes. Obviously getting a medal would boost Urist's mood, but so could joining an elite squad with lots of battle honours. "He was proud to become a member of The Certain Bridges."

And of course, the Certain Bridges may be annoyed at having a total greenhorn in their midst, At least until Urist proves himself.

Maybe a position could be created like the Bookkeeper, of an individual whose responsibility is to record fortress history and military records. This would allow the player to keep track of things like dwarven service in invasions and battles in Fortress Mode, as well as allowing the game to base the awarding of medals on these records.

The Armchair General? :p

I'd like a Military Historian noble who keeps track of important battles and can be used to nominate certain dwarves for honors or get the commander to "dishonorably discharge" the coward who went back to the hospital because he broke his toe.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Medals should be treated like coins in that they pull from battles/sieges in your fortress' history, allowing you to assign specific medals as part of a uniform

How that would work as part of the clothing system, I don't know, but giving the survivors of the Great Three Nation Bronze Colossus Siege of 1060 would be pretty cool.  You could see who survived and those with the most distinguished service would have more medals.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

The Bard, singing tales of the heroes' greatness? Dwarves already have a musical ability variable, and I think having them play instruments was on the old dev pages, so this would fit nicely with that.

How about initiation ceremonies, where the veterans force the FND to strip naked and wrestle kobolds in the Hall of Traps?
